Godfathers of Kenyan music - Orchestre les Mangelepa - having just returned from a European tour including WOMAD, Tropical Pressure Festival & BBC Swahili performances, for the first time the legends tour on the remote island of Lamu for a series of 3 unique performances set to celebrate the beauty, diversity and history of the stunning island.

Joachim Sauter, The Maweni Carriers, 2012 2018
An installation of larger than life statues carved from wood portraying Coral Stone Carriers. The Maweni Carrier project was born in Lamu and although it represents the toil and struggle of many impoverished countries, the project is exclusive to the unique environment in Maweni on Manda Island. This is a world premiere Vernissage of Joachim's 6 year project which will be introduced by guest speaker Augustin Noffke, Hamburg.

Friday 22nd Baraka Gallery - Lamu - 6.30 - 8.30pm

Bringing their classical sounds for the first time in Lamu the Nairobi String Quartet will open the Joachim Sauter : Maweni Carries on Friday 22nd Feb. This will be a once in a life time opportunity to witness classics Haydn, Bach, Vivaldi in the Lamu fort followed by a 2nd performance at Baraka Gallery from 6.30pm - 8pm on the same day.

The Nairobi String Quartet was founded in June 2017. David Ralak as first violin, Ken Mwiti as second violin, Emmanuel Nacheri as violist and Alexandra Stapells as cellist.

Saturday 23rd - Shela Beach - 12pm - 5pm

Installations of Parchute Silk in the Monsoon Kaskazi Winds
Marc Einsiedel & Felix Jung


The duo realized that Lamu lost the tradition of kiting in Kaskazi winds. Now the artists will combine the knowledge of Lamu sailors and the skills of Lamu tailors to design spectacular pieces of parachute silk made into flags and kites playing in the strong Kaskazi winds on legendary Peponi beach.

Saturday 23rd -Diamond Beach Manda- 6pm late

DJ's Adam Isbell Rachbah No-Nation & Duncan Brooker: Strut Records will be bringing the tropical vibes to Diamond Beach with their exquisite taste and knowledge of the continents rhythms the 2nd Music On the Islands event is going to be lit. Mangelepa will also have a sunset performance before we turn to the decks.

Dhow Race 2pm

Saturday & Sunday on Shela Beach

Interactive beach art with Ocean Sole

Ocean Sole will be on the beach of Shela at the Lamu Art Festival on Saturday & Sunday afternoons showcasing how they make art from flip-flops that have been collected from the beaches Kenya. There will a live demonstration of a masterpiece, made with flip-flops collected from Manda Island. They will have sculptures for sale for you take home with you. Also live music, acrobatics and free henna painting.
